About CantonesePath
CantonesePath connects Cantonese learning with the stories, culture and everyday life of Hong Kong. It is a place to learn at your own pace, explore your interests and build a lasting connection with the language.
CantonesePath was founded by Mandy, a Hong Kong-born language educator. Drawing on three decades of combined professional experience in media, communications and teaching, she brings together a storyteller’s curiosity and a teacher’s understanding of how people learn.
Her aim is to share Hong Kong’s stories, culture and language with a wider audience and to help learners feel more confident using Cantonese in everyday life.
A Clearer Path to Learning Cantonese
With its rich vocabulary, expressive tones and lively everyday expressions, Cantonese can feel challenging to learn. Mandy believes that a clear structure, meaningful context and opportunities to practise can make it more approachable.
CantonesePath follows the CEFR framework and a communicative approach to language learning, with an emphasis on using Cantonese in meaningful, real-life situations. Lessons combine structured progression with authentic language, listening, interaction and practical communication, supported by technology and interactive activities.
The aim is to help learners move from understanding words and patterns to using Cantonese with confidence.
Language Through Culture
Four core sections bring language and culture together:
- Hong Kong History explores Hong Kong’s past through the places, people and stories that have shaped the city.
- Street Cantonese introduces the slang and everyday expressions that give spoken Cantonese its personality.
- Living Culture looks at traditions, customs and daily life, revealing the meaning behind the language.
- Grammar in Action explains useful language patterns and helps learners put them into practice.
Together, these sections help learners understand how Cantonese works, how people use it and the cultural context behind it.
The Gigantic Crab’s Corner
The Gigantic Crab’s Corner shares news, discoveries and interesting stories about Hong Kong, Cantonese and its culture—from the past to the present, with an eye on what comes next.
Each short, easy-to-read post aims to offer something useful in about a minute: a fresh perspective, a cultural insight or a story worth sharing.
